We Are Hiring! Project Coordinator: Empower Them

rebekah · July 9, 2020 ·

Project Coordinator, Empower Them Position Description

We are hiring for the coordinator of an exciting new project! We have received valuable funding from the NL Federation of Labour to begin a project aimed at increasing not only our organizational capacity, but the capacity of service providers, workplaces, and the general population in understanding and responding to those who experience gender-based violence. We are searching for a coordiantor to create and deliver an online program that addresses and empowers friends, families, co-workers and community members to respond to women experiencing domestic violence in woman-centered, trauma-informed ways.

Through a community consultation process, the coordinator will lead our team to develop and test online material to make sure that it meets the needs of different audiences: Indigenous people, people of colour, newcomers, members of LGBTQ2S+ communities, and folks with different abilities and literacy levels. We will also work to ensure that all materials can be accessed by those who are deaf and visually-impaired, two groups often left out of traditional service offerings. By using plain language and straightforward concepts, the online Ecourse will:
• describe the dynamics and common tactics that characterize gender-based
violence
• provide an overview of the scope and impact on individuals, families,
communities and society,
• explore the underlying factors that allow gender-based violence to exist,
• offer insight into the various risks and choices that survivors face,
• address common questions related to gender-based violence, and
• share how to be part of the solution
The course will encompass skill building, reflection questions, videos and activities that help users recognize and challenge their prejudices and develop ways of understanding how GBV impacts people. Users will walk away with concrete tools that can help in any situation where GBV may be/has been present.

If you are passionate about supporting women who have experienced gender-based violence, love community building and would like to be part of a feminist organization, please see the job ad attached. Resumes with cover letters should be e-mailed to laura@sjwomenscentre.ca by 4pm on Sunday, July 26.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Connecting With Women During the COVID-19 Pandemic

rebekah · March 26, 2020 ·

March 26, 2020

The St. John’s Status of Women Council and Women’s Centre would like to advise women that while our services may look a little different right now, we are very much here for you.

We know there is uncertainty and things are hard. We also know we’ve never met a woman who hasn’t done hard. We see you. We see your strength. We are available to connect with and support women in St. John’s and surrounding areas.

There is a great deal of evidence that during times of economic hardship and societal stress, rates of domestic violence increase. We specialize in programming for women who have experienced domestic violence, and believe these services are more important now than ever.

We have individual support available by phone Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 4:30. As well, our Right Here, Right Now, walk-in counselling service is now a phone-in counselling service. You can call Tuesdays 12-7 and Wednesdays 12-5. No appointment needed. Totally anonymous and confidential.

This program is the only woman-centered, trauma-informed single session model in Canada. We respond to your needs, on your terms. Any woman can call to talk about any issue that’s important to her.

To access these services, please call 709-753-0220 or email reception@sjwomenscentre.ca. We look forward to connecting with you.

The Bell Let’s Talk Community Fund is improving women’s mental health care – Right Here, Right Now

rebekah · January 17, 2019 ·

St. John’s, NL – Today, the St. John’s Women’s Centre received a $25,000 Bell Let’s Talk Community Fund grant for the Right Here, Right Now drop-in counselling program for women. Right Here, Right Now is the first and only individual counselling service for women of its kind in Canada.

Women’s Centre staff and supporters gathered with representatives from Bell this morning at an event to celebrate the $25,000 funding, which will allow for the expansion of counselling services offered at the centre.

“Many women face a complexity of issues and long wait lists impede their ability to access appropriate services,” said Dana Warren, Clinical Team Lead and Counsellor, St. John’s Women’s Centre. “Securing free drop-in counselling services guarantees that we can deliver a therapeutic service that addresses women’s unique mental health needs when they need it the most. Right Here, Right Now is essential to women’s wellness. As we continue to grow, Bell Let’s Talk supports the future of a much needed and lauded community mental health program.”

The Right Here, Right Now program was created to improve access to mental health care for women in our community, especially those coping with lengthy wait times for “traditional” mental health services. Twice a week, on Tuesdays from 12-7 p.m. and Wednesdays from 12-5 p.m., the Women’s Centre provides free and confidential counselling. No appointment or referral is needed to receive service.

“Bell Let’s Talk is proud to support the St. John’s Women’s Centre’s Right Here, Right Now drop-in counselling program to help women in Newfoundland with mental health issues get the care they need,” said Mary Deacon, Chair of Bell Let’s Talk. “Having doubled the annual Bell Let’s Talk Community Fund to $2 million in 2018, we are helping some 120 organizations in communities across Canada, like St. John’s Women’s Centre, who are making a difference for those affected by mental illness.”

Bell Let’s Talk Day is January 30
The Bell Let’s Talk initiative promotes Canadian mental health with national awareness and anti-stigma campaigns like Bell Let’s Talk Day on January 30, and significant Bell funding of community care and access, research and workplace leadership initiatives. On Bell Let’s Talk Day, Bell will donate 5 cents to Canadian mental health programs for each of the following interactions, at no extra cost to participants:

  • Talk: Every mobile call and every long distance call made by Bell wireless and phone customers
  • Text: Every text message sent by Bell wireless customers
  • Twitter: Every tweet and retweet using #BellLetsTalk, featuring the special Bell Let’s Talk emoji, and Bell Let’s Talk Day video view at com/Bell_LetsTalk
  • Facebook: Every view of the Bell Let’s Talk Day video at com/BellLetsTalk and use of the Bell Let’s Talk frame
  • Instagram: Every Bell Let’s Talk Day video view at com/bell_letstalk
