Amelia Curran named Honorary Chair of the St. John’s Status of Women Council
Naming an Honorary Chair allows the St. John’s Status of Women Council (SJSOWC) to highlight the work and passion of a strong woman from St. John’s. Award-winning musician, activist and feminist Amelia Curran was the perfect match.
Jenny Wright, Executive Director of the SJSOWC said:
“We are unbelievably excited to have Amelia on board as honorary chair. Her passion for the arts, feminism and mental health advocacy are a perfect collaboration. We love and admire her belief in ‘noisy citizenship’ and her support for the work we do everyday is incredibly humbling.”
SJSOWC’s innovative mental health initiatives such as Right Here, Right Now: walk in counselling clinic for women, community programming at the Women’s Centre, Marguerite’s Place supportive housing for women and their political activism were the reason for her graciously accepting the role.
“There are tireless efforts at work every single day in St. John’s that do not grab the headlines. It is these daily efforts that are the front line towards equality, justice, and dignity for all women in our community. I am immensely proud to join and to celebrate the St. John’s Status of Women Council in all they continue to provide and accomplish.” – Amelia Curran
The St. John’s Status of Women Council is a feminist organization that since 1972 is continually working to achieve equality and justice through political activism, community collaboration and the creation of a safe and inclusive space for all women in the St. John’s area. The St. John’s Status of Women Council operates the Women’s Centre, Marguerites Place Supportive Housing Program & Safe Harbour Outreach Project.
