Empowering Them is our first free, publicly accessible e-course on gender-based violence (GBV). GBV is not a women’s issue or a private issue. This course will help you understand and explore the impacts that gender-based violence has on all of us. You will learn what signs of abuse to look for and how to tell the difference between facts and myths surrounding this taboo topic. You will also learn ways to show your support to people in your own life, and gain the skills and tools to help put a stop to it and make your community safer and stronger for everyone. We hope that Empowering Them will give you the tools to take action with confidence. This course offers a certificate in your name upon completion.

“In March 2022, the St. John’s Status of Women approached the St. John’s Regional Fire Department on the new e-course “Empowering Them,” a focus on gender-based violence (GBV). Given the nature of our work, we felt it would be a great tool for our staff when working with the public…. It generated quite a bit of conversation among our group, as many were not aware of the magnitude of what could be GBV and it gave us the tools and confidence to better recognize and act, whether it is happening around us or to us. … I am proud to say that the SJRFD have now made this part of our training plan to be conducted virtually every year, and I applaud the St. John’s Status of Women Council for the hard work and effort they put into developing such a thought-provoking and informative course.”
Sherry L. Colford, Fire Chief (SJRFD)
“Safe workplaces play an important role in building and maintaining safer homes and communities at large, and eliminating GBV in our workplaces starts with education. The Empowering Them e-course is a significant resource for employers and workers. It’s free, accessible, informative and easy-to-take for people of all ages 14+ and all genders. It’s important that everyone in our workforce take this e-course— eliminating GBV and building safe, thriving communities starts with each of us.”
